Children with autism should be given special attention..
Why is Autism common now a days? This is the question that came into my mind when I took up my course in Psychology. Autism is a life -long developmental disability that prevents individuals from properly understanding what they see, hear and otherwise, sense. This is the results in severe problems of social relationships, communication and behavior. Students or individual with autism have difficulty learning normal patterns of speech and communication and appropriate ways to relate to people, objects and events.

What causes Autism?
Autism is a brain disorder present from birth that affects the way the brain uses information. The cause of autism is still unknown. Some research suggests a physical problem affecting those parts of the brain that process language. There maybe some imbalance of the certain chemicals in the brain. Genetics factors may sometimes be involved. However, Autism may result from a combination of several factors.

What is the most common problem in Autism?
Students or individual with autism have extreme difficulty in learning language, social skills and relating to people. During my stay in school I had observed these children with autism.

How common is Autism?
In our school every classroom has 2 to 3 child with autism. Study shows also that it has four major developmental disabilities.

How does Autism affect behavior?
In my observation in the special education class, student with autism is experiencing socialization problems with his classmates, sometimes they expressed extreme hyperactivity or unusual passivity to others as well as to their sisters and parents.

How severe behavior problems in people with autism?
Behavior problems range from very severe to mild. Severe behavior problems can be aggressive and can inflict self-injuries behavior and difficult to change. Mild behavior is manageable and can be trained slowly although they still experience difficulties especially in communicating and socialization.
It is important to distinguish autism from mental retardation or other disorders to avoid confusion and in treatment techniques.
Here are the following Symptom / Areas Affected by Autism:
1. Communication - develops language slowly and sometimes not at all, uses words without purpose or meaning, uses gestures instead words
2. Social interaction - prefers being alone, shows no interest in making friends, lmited eye contacts.
3. Sensory impairment - unusual reaction to physical sensation, overly sensitive like to touch, and smell and taste.
4. Play - lacks spontaneous play, does initiates to games, or actions, difficulty in mixing to other children
5. Behavior - short attention span, over active or sometimes passive, exhibits aggressive or violent behavior, at times injures self.
What teachers can Do?
A teacher should develop program plan, objectives and collaboration with other people in the school
There should be instructional approaches and classroom management provided for autistic children only.
Other Interventions programs should be applied like medical intervention, behavior modification, sensory integration, visual training and many other related method that would help a child improve. Autism is a very complex disorder and that the needs of this individuals should be addressed fully.
